Scars, Scribbles, and the Power of Crayons

by Lara Lazenby

— 1974 —

I want something before I die. I even made a deal with God. The only thing getting in my way is cancer.

Every Friday in the hospital’s dungeon, I fight monsters in white lab coats and bloodsucker needle pokes. Death and I have epic arguments.

To escape, Mommie and I leave for Sedona’s Red Rock Country. I realize the Pueblo Indians and Mother Earth know more about scars and the power of God’s hand than I do.

My battle with Death has just begun. But I will get my greatest wish.
If I can just live long enough.
